Valuable victory for the Squirrels in Welfare dog-fight

This was the league fixture that was re-arranged after Cambrian’s bus broke down on the way to Caedelyn Park two weeks ago.  Much like their bus that day, this game got off to a good start but deteriorated as time went by.  In the end, we were all just pleased no one was injured and everyone got home safely.

The lack of tries was not for the want of trying but the two sides cancelled each other out and shared equally, the possession, territory and number of penalties in the first half.  The only try of the game came from Cambrian after a break in midfield that created some space for their winger to cross over in the corner.  Whenever the Squirrels got themselves into a position to score, Cambrian gave away a penalty, which was converted by centre, Ryan Stacey.  Rhiw were in front at the break, 9-5.

Late in the second half, the Squirrels got themselves into a great position to extend their lead and if it hadn’t been for another transgression, which saw the Cambrian number 14 yellow carded, at least another 5 points would have been added to the scoreboard.  Dave Gilbert controlled the ball expertly at the breakdown after successive drives towards the Cambrian try line, only for a loop pass to be intercepted by the winger.  On another day, a penalty try might have been awarded but this much needed win wasn’t going to come that easy.

Another two yellow cards were awarded before the end of the game when frustration got the better of one or two players but by then, Stacey had already slotted another penalty.  The game finished with a Squirrels’ victory and one that is overdue for this group of talented and committed players. Too many games have slipped from their grasp this season and some key decisions during games have not gone their way.  This will hopefully be the season turning point as we move two places up the table and look forward to hosting Barry RFC at Caedelyn Park next Saturday to continue our climb up the league.
