Coaches pour praise on plucky pillar Pontin

With Kris Bowden unavailable the Squirrels called for Dave Pontin to plug the gap against visitors Dinas Powys, and he came up with a man of the match performance despite his lack of regular match action. He epitomised the gutsy performance of Rhiwbina against a very determined Dinas, who threw everything at the Squirrels. One try-saving tackle in particular comes to mind, but he was everywhere putting his wobbly knees to the test. Captain fantastic Jamie Dabs also had a fine performance, always leading by example and well supported by the rest of the pack.  The backs tackled superbly and Dafydd, Josh Mosco and Ben always looked dangerous when they had the ball in hand.

But I don’t know how long I can stand any more of these close encounters of the 2 or 3 point kind! However, I think it’s inevitable when we have such a fixture backlog and teams always raise their game against the Squirrels and with other teams having good runs at the moment, I think we’re going to be put through the emotional mincer on the touchline for every game from now on!

Anyway, from the kick off Dinas went on the attack, but Rhiwbina took the lead with a Lewis Pearce penalty after six minutes.  Ben White soon equalised for Dinas, before Lewis again put Rhiwbina in front with his second penalty kick. Jamie Dabs and Josh T made some great runs, but all too often there were errors which gifted the initiative to Dinas.  Dinas then got themselves into the Rhiwbina 22 in the bottom corner and with their crowd baying them on, it took some tremendous defence by the Squirrels to keep them out.  A great run by Olly and a Dinas high tackle eventually got Rhiwbina into the Dinas 22 and into the scoreboard corner.  Rhiwbina went for the score but the Dinas defence also held out, and a penalty near the posts resulted in a scrum and another penalty was this time converted by Lewis to make the half time score 9-3.

A clean catch from the kick off by Pontin set up an early Rhiwbina attack and yet another Dinas infringement led to Lewis kicking his fourth penalty to make it 12-3.  Josh Mosco made a great run out of defence but then Dinas kept possession leading to a try by scrum half Sam Middlemiss, converted by White to make it 12-10 and about 20 minutes to go. The game went back and forward without let-up, but a Dinas forward was then shown a yellow card for foul play. Rhiwbina finally got themselves into the fire-station corner, but after several scrums they were penalised.  After a break by Dafydd down the left, Ben Sharif almost crossed in the corner. With the minutes slowly ticking down, Rhiwbina managed to keep the ball in the Dinas half, but the Rhiwbina faithful had visions of a repeat of the St Joes game two weeks ago as Dinas fought their way into the Rhiwbina half. But Dinas were penalised and Loren put in a monster relieving kick.

Then the same Dinas forward who had previously been shown yellow and returned to the field was shown a red card, and this prompted some of the Dinas officials to come onto the field of play.  The ref waited while they cleared the area before continuing with a Rhiwbina penalty and then line out on the half way line.  The ball was caught and the Rhiwbina forwards drove the ball all the way into the Dinas 22 before kicking it off the field for the ref to blow for time.
