Bangin' Burgers!

Rhiwbina Squirrels U10s played their first ‘international match’ against Tetbury on Sunday. After a short trip over the bridge, our boys arrived at the picturesque English rugby ground, complete with BBQ being fired-up outside the clubhouse! Beautiful.

On the pitch, the Squirrels had not played rugby for 8 weeks due to the WRU winter break – but it didn’t show, and any uncertainty soon melted away. Joel added a very quick try followed by Ben and Isaac also putting points on the board for the squirrels. Jake ran half the pitch at lightning speed before being cut just inches off the line. Shortly before half time Tetbury made their way to their try line and with a huge team effort from Rhiwbina they defended their territory well pushing them back. With smiles on their faces it was clear to see the squirrels had missed playing and were loving the game time, they went straight into the second half as strong as their first with William darting for the try line at super speed.  Jake received the ball from Jack M and reminded us of just how fast he can run too! Evan S & Chester put in huge tackling shifts, with Jack M intercepting the ball passing to William for the try. To finish, Josh bulldozed his way through the defensive line for Joel to touch down!

The second game saw the Squirrels play some lightning fast passing along the line, with Andre finishing an early try. Nathan relentlessly bullied the opposition in each tackle creating the space for Lewis to cut through Tetbury for the second. Seb twisted and turned in midfield to crash through and score a third try – making it an excellent start for the squirrels. Evan T was really up for the game, first to the tackle time and time again. Calum’s pick-up and runs were clinical pushing Tetbury on the back foot allowing Euan and Sonny to touch down for try’s. Tetbury were hard opposition clawing a couple of well worked try’s back before Andre and Callum put the game beyond doubt.

Next up, Tetbury started in possession before Isaac put in some cracking tackles. Within meters from the Tetbury try line Evan S intercepted the ball, offloading to William and down the line to Joel before Isaac sealed the deal and dived over for a try. Chester soon intercepted the ball passing to Evan who with his chest puffed outran dodging anyone in his way converting our second try. A further three Rhiwbina try’s in this half and one from Tetbury, both Jack M and Joel scored after receiving the ball from well-timed passes from Chester. Evan then scored again having received the ball from Josh. Second half saw more incredible team work from the boys, Josh never failing to impress with his “head down, I’m coming ready or not” attitude running through players like they were invisible, Ben making a great pass to Joel who then passed to Jake securing another try. Joel then put his legs to work again crossing the try line. Tetbury wanted another try and made our lads work hard - with tackles being put in by Ben, William and Jack M but Tetbury’s quick thinking & passing got through for a try. Chester finished with an excellent strong run, gliding over the line touching the ball down with a very well-deserved try.

The final game was a brilliant exhibition of rugby skills from both sides. Technically superb – a reward to all coaches & hours put into practicing. Andre again opened the scoring – from a well worked team try. Lewis collected well and dived over for another. Andre and Euan interchanged with great passing setting up each other for two more tries. It wasn’t all Rhiwbina and Jack Preece had to be an absolute rock in defence, with Calum picking up ball at the breakdown time and again. Nathan was relentless in his work rate and Sonny was able to capitalise again for the lads! Calum Evan glided through the Tetbury’s defence and Andre finished off after amazingly quick hands from Nathan.

Great Rugby by the whole quad! A credit to all of the hard work put in by the coaching team who make every session fun for the boys! The U10 Squirrels are looking forward to welcoming Tetbury to Caedelyn in April!
