After the seemingly never-ending deluge of rain it was great to actually get on the pitch and play a game last Sunday. The visitors were Treorchy in the first game in this season's Blues Cup and in a game that could have gone either way it was the Squirrels who ended on top by the narrow margin of 14-10 after a gruelling battle that was a real credit to both clubs. For the home team the recent defeat to Rumney and a rather indifferent effort at the District round robin meant that the team had much to prove and responded with a determined team effort that all contributed to with real commitment.
The forwards dominated in the first half and were responsible for the two converted tries but the visitors fought back well and it was only a tremendous defensive effort in the second half where the home team kept Treorchy at bay for nearly 20 mins without getting out of their own 22 that brought about the result.
The game was played in a fine spirit which matched the refereeing performance which was an example of how to communicate with young players.
