A bad day on the Common

Rhiwbina started well with some excellent positive rugby with good contributions from Dan Schwartz and James Griffiths.  Rhiwbina continued to press in the red zone and Dinas persistently infringed until the ref finally came back for the penalty which Ryan Stacey slotted over to give the Squirrels a deserved lead. Dinas were soon on the attack and levelled the scores with a Callum Bricknell penalty.  Bricknell then went on to be the most significant difference between the teams – controlling play with astute tactical kicking and bringing his backs into play when the time was right – a real man of the match performance.

Rhiwbina defended superbly in the club house corner to deny DInas a try from a line-out drive, but from a scrum Dinas spread the ball wide for Rhys Evans to score in the top corner, which Bricknell converted from the touch-line. Morgan Kneath went off with a leg injury for the Squirrels to be replaced by the returning Sean Monaghan, who went on to have a strong performance.

Rhiwbina got back into the Dinas half and Ryan Stacey kicked a penalty.  Ben Thomas secured a great turnover but the decisive lineout was lost and Dinas got back on the attack to be foiled by Dan Schwartz who kicked upfield and only the defending winger managed to beat him to the ball and score remained at 10-6 at the break.

Rhiwbina were on the attack for most of the opening fifteen minutes of the second half with clever runs from James Griffiths and Chris Williams up the top touchline, but Dinas defended well and broke away to score a try.  This was soon followed by their third try as the pressure mounted on the Squirrels’ defence. Dinas secured a bonus point when they intercepted a Rhiwbina pass to score under the posts. The Dinas No8 was shown a yellow card and then Rhiwbina scored a try in the clubhouse corner from a catch and drive with Ben Thomas claiming the score, to make the final score 29-11 to Dinas.

Rhiwbina’s next game is at home to Mountain Ash next Saturday and with a little more luck and the same amount of effort they could pull off a valuable win.
