Youth get off to flying start

Rhiwbina RFC Youth v Llantwit Major RFC Youth

Match Report

Saturday 15th September 2018, at Caedelyn Park, K.O. 2.30pm.

Week two of the 2018/19 campaign witnessed Rhiwbina Youth chalk up an impressive victory against Llantwit Major. This win followed on from the previous week’s successful start versus Dinas Powys, where Rhiwbina recorded an impressive 62-10 victory. Both games have seen Rhiwbina play with a structure and discipline that has earned them the right to score some excellent individual and team tries.

On Saturday, with a match day squad of 18 players that contained some old and new faces, both sides faced off at Caedelyn Park. The early exchanges were an even affair with Llantwit taking a 0-3 lead before Rhiwbina corrected early errors, with centre Geraint Porter crossing for the first try. A second was scored towards the end of the first half by the other centre Max Hill. Both tries were unconverted to leave Rhiwbina leading 10-3 at half time.

The second half started with Rhiwbina at full pace and the newly appointed Team Captain, Jake Macpherson, crossed early in the half for a fine individual score. This saw Rhiwbina move impressively through the gears and create two more expansive team tries, from the slippery Tom Powell, on the wing. The hard working Will Dungey then crossed from short range for a typical prop forward try. As part of an impressive back row performance, Rhiwbina number 7, Ollie Sykes capped a man of the match display with a barnstorming run from the half way line. His carry was inclusive of a double side-step to leave his opponent flat footed before scoring.

One conversion from outside half Mike O’Hanlon and three from scrum half Jake Macpherson gave a final score to Rhiwbina of 43-10.

Our next fixture is a home derby away to Llandaff.
