2nds conquer the Roman Legion

WRU Conference

Rhiwbina 2nds 19  Caerleon 2nds 14

If nothing else it was an entertaining afternoon at Caedelyn as Rhiwbina welcomed Caerleon in a rearranged WRU Conference match. There was also the eye-opening fact that there was a father and son playing for Rhiwbina with veteran Nick Corney in the centre and the ever-dependable son Jack at No 8. This was also coach Gareth Linton's last home game at the helm, and we'll miss such highly technical comments from the touchline like "Connor - get your arse down". There were also yellow cards galore as the ref tired his arms out from awarding penalties, and with Graham Middleton getting his customary warning on the touchline, it made for an all-action afternoon.

Rhiwbina took an early lead with an Ian Coates try, converted by Dylan Cassela, but the highlight of the early exchanges was touchjudge Hobbsy being flattened by one of the Caerleon players.  Thankfully his judgement wasn't impaired as he continued to advise the referee on line out throws.  Liam Woodyatt scored Rhiwbina's second try again converted by Dylan. But Caerleon fought back and scored a length of the field try just before half time to make the score at the break 14-7.

Caerleon brought the scores level straight from the kick off, but then Rhiwbina took control and there was a long period of pressure in the scoreboard corner, with several yellow cards being shown to Caerleon players who disrupted the Rhiwbina drive. Rhiwbina eventually got their try and it was Mr Reliable Ponting himself who crossed. There was then a period of passive scrums as Caerleon had props in the sin-bin and the game dragged on with stoppage after stoppage. but Rhiwbina held out for an important win which keeps them in a respectabe position in the league.
