Rhiwbina Under 16s clinch Cardiff Rugby Plate in thrilling final

Rhiwbina RFC U16s beat Pontypridd RFC 27-21 in Cardiff Rugby Plate Final

Squirrels drew first blood with a great try through Charlie Morgan Stephens and his try was converted by Iestyn Hutchings.

Pontypridd then scored 21 unanswered points to make the score 21-7 to Pontypridd at Half time.

Whatever was then said by the coaches to the players seemed to do the trick, as the Squirrels drew level with tries from Matt Light that was again converted by Iestyn Hutchings and Morgan Appleyard with Iestyn kicking a long-range conversion out on the far right touchline making it 21 – 21.

The boys then kept their composure and were awarded a penalty late into the 2nd half. Up stepped Iestyn Hutchings who again put the ball between the uprights under immense pressure to put the Squirrels ahead by 24-21.

Pontypridd could not make any headway against a strong and determined Rhiwbina defence and with pretty much the last play of the match Rhiwbina were awarded another penalty.

There was only one option and that was to go for 3 points to seal an unforgettable come back. Iestyn Hutchings placed the ball on the tee and went through the same routine before sending the ball straight between the uprights to silence the partisan crowd and end what was an absolute cracking game beating Pontypridd 27-21

The Squirrels were then deservedly crowned 2021-2022 Cardiff Rugby Plate Final Champions in front of their friends and families, having gone through the whole season unbeaten. True Champions.
