Tough going up The Tump

Cambrian Welfare RFC  42  Rhiwbina RFC  12

One thing for certain - there can be no more spectacular a setting for a rugby ground than The Tump and, at over 1,000ft (312 metres to be precise according to Paul's altimteter), this may be the highest rugby ground in Wales, with definitey the most interesting access! Several Rhiwbina faithful with 'medical challenges' found it difficult to make it up to the pitch!

With Rhiwbina again having to make enforced changes it was always going to be tough against determined and well-drilled opponents. Cambrian took an early lead with a converted try and were soon 14-0 ahead with another well-taken try. Rhiwbina at last got into an attacking position with some clever runs by James Griffiths, but then Cambrian scored a third converted try to make it 21-0 at the break.

Ponting was yellow-carded for a lineout offence and then the Cambrian No8 followed him after a dangerous high tackle. Cambrian secured their bonus point try and then a lucky bounce gave them a fifth and the score read 35-0.  But Rhiwbina were determined to restore their pride and with some great forward drives and a sniping run from James Griffiths they eventually scored with Sean Monaghan getting the touch-down, and Lewis converted well from the touchline. Rhiwbina had the most of the posession for the next fifteen minutes as a Cambrian player had another yellow card. Another lineout catch and drive this time saw Pat Ware go over for a try. However the home team were not finished.  As the game went into added time Rhiwbina dropped the ball on their 22 and inevitably it was snapped up by Cambrian and they raced through to score.
