A GAME OF NARROW MARGINS BUT IMPRESSIVE MORGANS

MATCH REPORT

DINAS POWYS 10 – 13 RHIWBINA

Saturday 10th November 2018

With many games called off because of the deluge of rain in recent days, it was a surprise to discover this one was on.  The pitch was in pretty good condition but was very narrow and time after time, our wingers ran out of room very quickly in attack.

The first half was littered with indiscipline, resulting in fifteen penalties and two yellow cards for Dinas Powys.  With one of their players penalised for stamping, Dinas were fortunate to see out the game with a full fifteen.  It was forty minutes to forget and was made worse by a nasty injury to Smithy.  There were some points on the board though, thanks to some accurate kicking from Lewis Pearce.  It was 0-6 at the half.

The second half was a little better but was still a story of indiscipline, high tackles and attacking play thwarted by the touchline.  From one of the penalties, Dinas Powys went for goal and narrowed the gap to three points.  When Rhiwbina did gain some yards out wide it was the back row who started the attack.  Olly, Sean and Rhys found gaps, broke tackles and stole ball to give the backs some chances.  Lewis tried to get the backline moving but wingers, Ben McStay and Mike Curtis, repeatedly found themselves shuffled into touch.  The new centre pairing of Loren Quick and Ben Shariff combined well when they did have chances but it was their defensive play that finally gave Rhiwbina the game’s first try.  From a ruck, Dinas decided to go wide but Loren intercepted a pass and raced half the length of the pitch to score under the posts.  Lewis converted to make it 3-13.

With Pat Ware having replaced the injured Smithy in the first half and Cameron coming on for Andrew DeAbreu early in the second half, Rhiw would rely on the other of the ‘DeAbros’, Jamie, to play the full eighty minutes this week.  Rory came on for James at scrum half and Josh Trewartha replaced Dan Murphy to give the pack some fresh lungs and it paid dividends.  After Dinas scored a try from a scrum, converted by their outside half, the score was narrowed again to three points, 10-13 and it was game on.  With ten minutes left on the clock, it was Rhiw’s defensive strength and game management that secured the win and another four points.  The pack were patient, accurate and resilient.  They kept the ball tight and recycled it time and time again to see out the final minutes of the game.

It was a close call but for his tenacity, his ability to read the play and get to breakdowns so quickly, the game’s Man of the Match was Rhys Morgans.
